Located near the Hyatt Regency and Phoenix Convention Center, the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center serves as an important cultural destination for the community. Its mission is to promote the Latino and Indigenous arts. It provides workshops, classes, and exhibitions for the community. It also features a performance stage. It is located at 147 E Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
The Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center’s current lease was due to expire in August, but city officials said that they will continue to support the nonprofit group. They are considering a new location, but the idea of creating a Latino Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix may not be as simple as many have thought. The location of the future facility could be in a building that the city already owns or in a green space nearby.
Earlier this year, the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center (ALAC) was forced to close its doors, after the organization’s board and executive director had to deal with COVID-19 concerns. Now, the group is looking for a new home and a fresh approach. They’re putting together an ad hoc committee to explore a few options, including looking at individual donors, corporate foundations, and possible city-owned properties.
The ad hoc committee will meet April 12 in a conference room on the 12th floor of Phoenix City Hall. Eight people will gather, along with representatives of city officials and staff. They will begin to explore the various locations for the Latino Cultural Center. They will also consider how to create an endowment to support ongoing costs.
The organization has a relatively small budget, at just $1 million. Taking over the Museo Chicano space was a sweet deal, but the lease is up. The city has approved funding for renovations, but the city council has deferred $302,000. This is in addition to a grant that Phoenix routinely gives to organizations like ALAC. Now, city officials say they’re working to help the group find a new location and to ensure it continues to function as a community destination.
