What are the two most important parts of estate planning? This is the thing that gets right down to the heart of the issue.
Most important part is, honestly, the weight that you will feel lifted off your shoulders when this is finally done. Most of us have gone through something in life where we couldn’t have explained what it would be like until we actually experienced it.
Maybe you’ve gone on a trip somewhere. Maybe you’ve had something very challenging happen and you’ve gotten through it. You looked back and you thought: I never could have been able to just tell myself, explain to myself what it would feel like to get through that.
Doing your estate plan is a lot like that. If you’ve never done it before, you don’t really know what it feels like to have it done. There’s a big weight that gets lifted off your shoulders when you get it done.
The first thing is how much it benefits you to just get it done. To just not have that weight on your shoulders that you don’t even really necessarily know you’re carrying around.
I think the second most important part is being able to literally look my wife in the eyes. I look at her in the eyeballs and know I did the right thing for her. Deep down in my heart and my own soul, to myself, I can say “I’ve done the right thing for you.”
I’m not leaving these strings just hanging out there and a big, giant mess for you to clean up after I’m gone. Like, this is the most important person in my life, I should probably take care of that business. So for me, those are the two most important things about estate planning.
Summary
The two most crucial aspects of estate planning boil down to two aspects. First, completing an estate plan brings an immense sense of relief. Second, it’s knowing deep within that you’ve safeguarded your spouse’s future. By taking care of your estate matters, you’re ensuring they won’t be left with a chaotic mess to handle after you’re gone.
